Personal History

Dr Lowell S. Kabnick is a world-renowned surgical teacher and Vascular Surgery Specialist from Morristown, New Jersey.

He claims to have wanted to be a physician ever since seeing how much his paediatrician father was loved by patients and respected in the community.

Professionally, his proudest moments include recognising that endovenous thermal ablation would pave the way for significant changes in venous intervention in 1998 and his father handing him his medical diploma at graduation.1

Outside of medicine, Dr Kabnick is a keen water sport enthusiast, including sailboat racing, scuba diving and powerboat motoring. “I have been known to sculpt, play tennis and encourage the equestrian sport of Show Jumping.”1

 

Academic History

In 1972, Dr Kabnick got his BA in Speech Pathology and Audiology from George Washington University. He continued at George Washington University and obtained his Medical Degree in 1976.1

He was an Intern in General Surgery at Bellevue Hospital, New York University from 1976 to 1978. From then until 1980, he was a Resident in General Surgery and then Chief Resident Surgeon at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. From 1981 to 1982, he was a Fellow in Vascular Surgery at Mt Sinai Hospital, New York.1

 

Career Overview

Dr Kabnick is a Vascular Surgeon and Venous Specialist at Kabnick Vein Center. 

He is also the Immediate Past President of the American Venous Forum. He is board-certified in surgery, phlebology and is a registered phlebology sonographer.3

Dr Kabnick is an internationally-renowned innovator and medical educator and has developed many minimally-invasive procedures for treating varicose and spider veins.2 He developed the TreSheath device, which carries the laser fibre and improved the safety of the endovenous laser ablation of varicose veins.1 

In 1986, he established the first vein treatment centre in New Jersey exclusively dedicated to treating vein problems and vascular disease, presently recognized as one of the world’s foremost vein treatment centres.1, 2 In 1999, Dr Kabnick was the first vascular surgeon in the USA to use radiofrequency ablation to close the great saphenous vein.1

Dr Kabnick has been featured on the ABC program New Jersey Viewpoint and the Later Today Show. He has more than 80 publishing credits to his name in leading journals and textbooks which are commonly used as guidelines for the best practices in vein treatment.2

He was the Associate Editor of the Phlebology Forum in 2009 and has been the Assistant Editor of the Journal of Phlebology since 2010.1 Dr Kabnick serves as President of the American Venous Forum Foundation and on the Board of Directors for the American College of Phlebology as well as the Board of Directors for the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) for Vein Centers.3 He has also been on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Certified Wound Specialists and Vascular Medicine.1
